After obtaining his Bachelor's degree from OAC in 1951, Herman Tiessen worked for one year in the Fruit and Vegetable Branch of the Ontario Department of Agriculture. He earned his Master's degree from Michigan State University in 1953 and his Ph.D. in 1955. Later that year, he joined the faculty of the Department of Horticulture at OAC. He died on Dec. 10, 1987. James Pinkney Hambleton, newspaper editor, physician, and politician, was born ca. 1830, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and died in 1897, in Washington, D.C. He moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in the mid or late 1850's, and became the first editor of the newspaper, SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY, in 1859.
